Nutrition Education

FoodWIse is a community nutrition education program within the Health & Well-Being of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Extension. University of Wisconsin-Extension Family Living Programs respond to community needs with research-based education and partnerships that support Wisconsin families and communities. FoodWIse is federally funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed). We seek to empower Wisconsin residents with limited incomes to make healthy choices to achieve healthy lives and reduce health disparities

Youth Programming

FoodWIse teaches nutrition lessons in Elementary Schools where 50% or more of their students participate in free or reduced school meals. In Marquette County, lessons are taught to 4k, 1st and 3rd grade students. Topics include learning about MyPlate and the five food groups, healthy snacks, the importance of hand-washing and spending less time in front of screens and more time getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. During some of the lessons the children also have the opportunity to sample new healthy foods and learn how to make healthy choices.

Food Share Wisconsin

As of October 15, 2004 the name of the federal Food Stamp Program in Wisconsin has been changed to “FoodShare Wisconsin.” This essential food and nutrition program no longer uses “stamps” to deliver benefits to persons enrolled in the program. The Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services hopes that this new name and image will foster an expansion of the program so all eligible children and families receive the food and nutrition assistance they need. For more information on FoodShare Wisconsin, go to https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/foodshare/

To find out if you are eligible to apply for benefits, report changes, ask questions, or make an appointment go to: www.access.wi.gov or call 1-888-256-4563 toll free.
